Washington DC: PN Hoffman announced today that restaurateur Andy Shallal, owner of Busboys and Poets, has signed on to open Eatonville, a casual dining restaurant in the commercial space of The Flats at Union Row. Union Row, PN Hoffman’s largest project to date, is located at 2125 14th Street, NW. Eatonville will occupy approximately 6,000 square feet in the southern portion of the building and feature indoor seating for about 250 guests as well as an outdoor patio. The fare will be derived from the heritage of the U Street Corridor, featuring southern and African influenced cuisine. The restaurant is anticipated to open in early fall 2008. The restaurant is named in tribute to Eatonville, one of the first all-black towns to be formed after the Emancipation Proclamation. This important site is also the childhood home of American folklorist Zora Neal Hurston. Hurston, a leader of the Harlem Renaissance known best for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, also collaborated with Langston Hughes – after whom Shallal’s Busboys and Poets is named. Referencing this close personal relationship, the two restaurants are, in fact, situated across the street from each other. “I am very pleased with the continued revitalization of this historic U Street Corridor,” said Jim Graham, DC Councilmember (D-Ward One). “Busboys and Poets was very successful. Now, I look forward to Mr. Shallal’s new restaurant. Ward One is pleased to welcome Eatonville with open arms.” In addition to Eatonville, the ground-level retail at Union Row will feature Yes! Organic Market and Georgetown Valet Drycleaners. “We are committed to creating mixed-use properties with street-level retailers that truly serve and contribute to the neighborhood,” said Monty Hoffman, Founder and CEO of PN Hoffman. “Apparent from his already successful Busboys and Poets, Andy Shallal’s Eatonville will continue his dedication to the historically conscious re-development of the U Street Corridor.” Since 1993, PN Hoffman has been developing extraordinary upscale condominium residences and mixed-use projects helping transform neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. The Company is deeply committed to serving the communities of Washington and has completed over 35 developments in the City since its inception.
