FOR RELEASE December 12, 2006

Washington DC: PN Hoffman/ER Bacon Development and First Congregational United Church of Christ (FCUCC) today announced a partnership to redevelop the Church’s property at 945 G Street NW to accommodate a new church, meals and social service program and condominium housing units.

First Church was founded on November 15, 1865 by abolitionists at the end of the Civil War as the first racially inclusive church in Washington, DC. One of the church’s major early achievements was the founding of Howard University. The Church has occupied the site since 1866

The project’s design is a collaboration between DC’s award winning Cunningham + Quill Architects and New York’s internationally acclaimed Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. The complete project will consist of a new sanctuary; meeting and office space for the Church; space for social service programs; and 140 condominium units above ranging from studios to two bedrooms with den. The building will be a LEED-Silver “green” building and the condominium portion will include roof terrace, gardens, a pool, and other amenities.

First Church will devote a portion of its proceeds from the partnership to further its social action mission including the Dinner Program for Homeless Women, local and international advocacy for peace and justice and housing for very low income people off site.
